Cambodia, too, remained a Theravada country from the beginning of the Christian era coexisting with Hinduism throughout in the 8th and 9th centuries Cambodia was a vassal state of the Buddhist Sailendra kingdom of java. Jayavarman VII (1181-1219), a Mahayana Buddhist was a great ruler who built numerous temples in his capital Angkor Thom, the major temple being Bayon with hundred of large towers of bodhisattva faces. Since the 13th century, Theravada Buddhism has remained the state religion.
